After a period of composing works for larger ensembles of around thirty musicians, I began this piece as a study in trying to write for just two instruments. The initial material stuck with me enough that I felt it should be carried through to completion. I chose viola, rather than violin, very deliberately in an effort to explore the darker timbres which the viola can provide. The moods in this piece are largely reflected by the title of the piece: I’m used to writing music on a diet of strong, black coffee. When I wrote the first portion of this piece, I had run out of coffee from my usual shop and resorted to several boxes of tea. I noticed a considerably different tone in the piece and decided this must have been caused by the tea.
