My first foray into writing for a string quartet, the inspiration for
this piece was the 21st birthday of my significant other. As the 21st birthday is a time of celebration for most Americans, I wanted this piece to convey a number of moods. It starts with a bluesy jaunt,
jovial in nature. The second movement is a waltz, referencing the
dancing that often comes with celebration. The final movement is plodding, as the night winds down, and themes from earlier in the piece return to wrap the piece to a close. “A Score and One Quartet” draws some inspiration from the string quartets of Dmitri Shostakovich.
